I was up bright and early this morning doing my regular 3B regimen: Books, Bible and Blogs along with some writing. I love the fact that my entire family is sleep, it’s dark outside and it’s literally as quiet as a church mouse. I can actually hear myself think, I can hear the whispers from God, I can hear the cars drive by and in the distance “I Hear The Trash-Man…”
I was sitting in the bed with my laptop in hand, just typing away; as my thoughts were just flowing onto the computer screen word-by-word. As I’m typing I realize that “I Hear The Trash Man…” The trash-man began to get closer and closer to my house and the only thing I could think of is “I Hear the Trash-man…” Finally, I could tell that the trash-man was in front of my house, so I looked out the window and watched as the trash-man lifted our two trash receptacles, dumped the trash and drove away.
I know you are probably asking what does this have to do with the price of tea in China… anyways here are the two life lessons and the two take-a-ways for me:
- The Trash-man has a unique sound, you can hear him from a distance, you know that he’s coming and you know what to expect when he gets there. Are you/your church/your business… making the right noises where people can hear you coming from a distance and know what to expect when you get there? What results do they expect: positive, negative, remarkable…
- When we surrender our lives to Christ, it’s like… imagine hearing the trash-man coming from a distance, emptying your trash (wiping your slate clean). The choice is ours regarding how much junk, trash, garbage we put back in our receptacles of life.

I usually think that I hope I haven’t tried to cram too much junk into my receptacle, and it irritates my trash man. But, I bet God happily takes it ALL away.

When i hear the trash man I am usually making sure that I put the trash can out!! haha
Those are good take-a-ways from the trash man. Very creative. Going to make sure I am making the right sound!

Scotty! I can’t believe you overlooked a really great morality comparison here! OK, I’ll give you a hint; so, if I drive by yer house on trash day, will I see yer recycling bin out there too? (grin)

Great analogy… However, today when i saw the title of this post all I thought was, “Our trash cans have been at the road for 2 days, where is OUR trashman at?” Hope our trashman comes today! But, isn’t it great that we can throw trash in “our recepticles” anytime we want, and God always takes the trash for us? We never have to wait for a specific day!

I like the trash truck, loud, stinky, & obnoxious in the morning. Kind of like me. I’ve been processing the traditions that we have here. We’re a small country church with a building and a really bad website. But, principle must come before practice.
Thanks Pastor Scotty for helping me think outside my block-head.

I really like this post. Side note, I live in the country and also wake-up early when the family is sleep but I hear nothing but my thoughts, typing, and worship. These are the type of post I can sit on for days. It is important for me as an individual to have people hear me coming and thinking – godly, fun, encouraging, productive, and loving!

I usually think, “Shoot, did I take the trash out?” But I like what you said better.
